Zifio: The Last Journey

In March 2019, the lifeless body of a beaked whale [zifio in Spanish], a little-known species of cetacean belonging to the Ziphidae family, which spends most of its life submerged in the deep sea, was found off the coast of Caleta Tortel.

Why would a deep-sea animal leave its natural habitat for the coast?

MERI’s Cetacean Area, together with several academic and scientific institutions, decided that this unusual finding would be the beginning of a series of investigations, in order to obtain data that would allow us to deepen the knowledge and conservation of this species.

This process was captured in the documentary “Zifio: The Last Journey.”
